
Coach Fran Cusick has been a part of Stowe Running Camp since 2011 and has served as camp director since 2015. He is a USATF Level 1 certified track and field coach with extensive experience across the high school, collegiate, and post-collegiate levels.
Coach Cusick has coached at Arlington Catholic High School, Lesley University, and Tewksbury Memorial High School, where he currently serves as the head outdoor track coach for both boys and girls. In addition, he is the head coach of Battle Road Track Club, one of the most accomplished post-collegiate club teams in the Northeast.
In the spring of 2017 and again in 2019, Coach Cusick was named Boston Globe Coach of the Year for girls outdoor track. He has also been recognized as Merrimack Valley Conference Coach of the Year on multiple occasions. Under his leadership, the Tewksbury girls outdoor track team won the Massachusetts All-State Championship in 2016 and finished as runner-ups in 2017. In cross country, the Tewksbury girls were Massachusetts State runners-up and ranked 9th in the Northeast Region in 2017.
Coach Cusick has coached numerous standout athletes, including Makayla Paige, a Stowe counselor who achieved All-American status in the 800 before winning the Division I National Championship at UNC in 2025, and Rachel Sessa, a Stowe counselor and Massachusetts state mile champion in 2016 who competed at Georgetown.
With Battle Road Track Club, he has led the team to numerous road and cross country victories and coached athletes who have qualified for the U.S., British, Scottish, and Canadian Olympic Trials. Notable athletes he has worked with include Maddy Berkson, Amy Piccolo, Holly Rees, Marcel Aubry, Declan Neary, and Eli Moskowitz.
As an athlete, Coach Cusick competed on the Battle Road cross country team that placed 13th out of 60 teams at the 2015 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships. He has personal bests of:
- 2:32:58 in the marathon (Boston 2014, 5:50 pace)
- 1:09:39 in the half marathon (5:19 pace)
- 15:08 for the 5K
- 31:40 for the 10K
Coach Cusick also teaches History at Tewksbury Memorial High School. His coaching philosophy emphasizes patience and long-term aerobic development, both of which are key principles at Stowe Running Camp.
